Excavations at Al Nuqfa Fort

The Department of Antiquities and Tourism in Al Ain has started new excavations at the ruins of al- Nuqfa Fort in the city of Al Ain. The site is located on the tip of the eastern ridge of Jebel Hafit, which radiates from the massif itself and extends to Wadi al-Sarooj on the other side of Al Ain Oasis. Prior to excavations some remains of walls built of a mixture of stones and mud bricks were visible. Though badly eroded, the location of the fort and the mixture of pottery, scattered on the surface are of importance. The function of the fort may have been to control and protect the oasis. Pottery scattered is a mixture of Late Islamic and Iron Age. It is still not possible to determine whether this Islamic fort was built on an earlier one or not, as excavations are still confined to the upper layers. It is worth mentioning that there are several forts in the City of Al Ain, mostly belonging to the royal family of Al Nahyan, and the earliest one is Muraijib Fort, which is around two centuries ago. The surface finds from Al- Nuqfa and the excavation results obtained so far indicate that this fort has preceded the oldest known fort in Al Ain by several centuries, and its date may have been associated with the early history of the Al Ain Oasis.
