The
fort which, is called Sultan fort or sometimes the
Eastern Fort, is one of several forts that were
built by the royal family of al Nahyan in al Ain.
According to the inscriptions depicted on the wooden
panel over the gate, the fort was built by Sheikh
Sultan bin Zayed (father of Sheikh Zayed, the president)
in 1328 Hijra, i.e. around 1910.
It was, restored by the Department of Antiquities
and Tourism in 1969 and one of its towers had
to be rebuilt in 1991. Sun-dried mud
brick and clay were the main construction materials
used in the city of Al Ain for the past five thousand
years. Sultan fort was built of the same materials
in a square shape with four rooms and three round
towers. Palm tree trunks cut lengthwise were used
to make the roof. Gutters were also made of similar
trunks. One of the towers was used as a jail.
The room on left hand side of the gate was a guestroom
while the small one on the right was used by the
guards and considered as a coffee room. The two
other rooms open onto a courtyard and in between
is a small kitchen. The fort was provided with
a well (dry now). The holes on the upper part
of the walls were used in the past to defend the
fort.
This fort is open in the mornings only and closed
in the afternoons, on Fridays and on public holiday.
